Stockwell International News Alert 27th September 2021

Protected Industrial Action

Stockwell International has received updates in regards to Nationwide strikes. The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) has announced an “aggressive” round of upcoming nationwide strikes at Patrick terminals.

Patrick CEO Michael Jovivic said, “The MUA’s actions are frankly bewildering. It seems to have completely lost the plot. This blatantly aggressive strike action demonstrates that it has no regard for the suffering of everyday Australians who have felt the impact of COVID-19 lockdown, job losses and restrictions over the past 18 months.”

“The Fair Work Commission (FWC) can make an order to suspend or terminate protected industrial action on its own initiative, or on application by prescribed entities if the action has threatened, is threatening, or would threaten:

  • to endanger the life, personal safety, health or welfare of the population or part of it; or
  • to cause significant damage to the Australian economy or an important part of it”

Patrick is the only stevedore not to have finalized enterprise agreements (EA) in 2021 but they have been negotiating with the MUA since February last year.

EA negotiations occur every 3 years so protected industrial actions (PIA) will always occur at the stevedores.

It is a hard pill to swallow for everyone in the industry as this proposed strikes come at such a volatile time in the industry.
