Stockwell International Urgent News Alert 9 October 2023

DP World Industrial Action – Update

Stockwell International would like to provide information regarding the impending industrial action across the DP World Terminals, effective today, 6thOctober in Fremantle.  Following states will be Sydney and Brisbane on the 7thOctober and Melbourne on the 8th October.

The CFMEU Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) division has made its intentions of industrial action clear, committing to several strikes across October nationally as a response to negotiations with DP World regarding a new industrial agreement.  The strikes across Australia will vary in each state from bans on working overtime or extending shifts to full eight-hour work stoppages.

Stockwell International anticipates there will be impacts in the form of disruptions through potential vessel bunching and backlogs with unloading vessels.  These impacts will uncontrollably lead to delays of container collection from the wharf and could see port precinct congestion occur, thus resulting in storage and detention charges.

Stockwell International will continue to keep clients updated with any changes relating to this industrial action as we receive it. Please note that any storage or detention charges that incur during this time will not be the responsibility of Stockwell International.

DP World Fremantle:

  • Effective: Friday, 6 October.
  • Work stoppages of varying lengths will commence today from 4hour, 8hour, 12hour and 24hour stoppages which started today at 6:00am and will end on 8th October at 6:00am.

DP World Melbourne:

  • Effective: Sunday, 8 October.
  • Members will engage in a series of work stoppages ranging from 1-hour to 24-hour durations.
  • Moreover, various bans on operations such as overtime, shift extensions, and work on certain ships will commence from Sunday, 8 October and will be in effect until Friday, 20 October.

DP World Brisbane:

  • Effective: Saturday, 7 October.
  • Several bans on operations will be launched, such as overtime bans, and shift extension bans.

Qantas Terminal Delays Across Australia – Update

Stockwell International has received new information regarding Qantas terminal delays across Australia.

Please note we are still experiencing severe delays for all air freight collections arriving through the Qantas terminal nation-wide. These delays are impacting arriving cargo, dating back to the 20th of September.

Qantas have provided multiple updates advising that they are getting “back on track,” however this does not appear to be completely accurate with little progress reported in all east coast depots.

Please see below from the FTA (Freight & Trade Alliance Pty Ltd)

  • As you would understand Qantas Freight is experiencing high numbers of customer queries
    • Whilst customers are using every contact, they have to try to expedite their queries for cargo, this in fact is creating duplication of effort across multiple channels and in fact counterproductive to assisting us clear cargo.
  • In an effort to minimise duplicated effort and impacting productivity, which can then lead to further reduced customer outcomes, our Terminal escalations are currently being limited to critical commodities, eg. human organs and remains, urgent medical, animals, AOG parts, perishables.
    • Commodities not included in the above are still being managed, however we are upfront in saying we must prioritise those in the above categories for our customers and the community.

Please note, any additional charges that occur as a result of this will not be the responsibility of Stockwell International.

Stockwell International will continue to keep clients updated with the newest information as we receive it.

Major Road Congestion in Port of Melbourne as West Gate Tunnel Project Enters New Phase

The following statement was provided by the Container Transport Alliance Australia regarding the Major Road Congestion in Port of Melbourne.

Container transport operators in the Port of Melbourne are dismayed by the level of road congestion and traffic delays experienced today (Monday 9 October 2023) as the West Gate Tunnel Project (WGTP) enters a new phase of road closures, lane restrictions and heavy vehicle detours.

Significant lane restrictions have been imposed (westbound and eastbound) on Footscray Road in the Swanson Precinct of the Port of Melbourne as the WGTP continues to complete overhead road structure works.

Transport operators have been left wondering whether the congestion being experienced now is what they are likely to experience for several months until the road construction is finalised.

If that is the case, landside efficiency and productivity at the Port of Melbourne will be severely compromised.  Ultimately, this will be to the detriment of importers and exporters, and consumers, in the peak season leading into Christmas.

CTAA has been assured today that the Government is putting in place additional measures to divert private vehicles away from Footscray Road, and to alter the traffic-light sequencing at a number of intersections to allow more trucks to pass per cycle.

Effectively, this is “day one” of this next phase of road disruptions and closures due to the West Gate Tunnel Project.  Industry will continue to try to work with the Project and the Government to overcome the negative impacts of congestion and delays.

However, it is clear to the container logistics industry that if the road congestion experienced today continues, then trade through the Port of Melbourne will be negatively impacted to a large degree in what is traditionally its most busy period of operations.
