NEWS: Why is Panama Canal drying up and what does it mean for global shipping?

There’s a backlog of vessels waiting to cross one of the world’s crucial maritime passageways which saves ships from travelling thousands of kilometres.

Low water levels in the Panama Canal prompted capacity cuts earlier this year and carriers are still facing months of navigating restrictions.

Here’s why the canal is drying up and what it could mean for the world’s maritime commerce.

Why is the Panama Canal important?

The canal is a 65km-passage which about 6 per cent of all global shipping trade passes through.

It connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and its construction significantly reduced the journey for ships travelling between the oceans.

More than 14,000 ships crossed the canal in 2022.

Container ships are the most common users of the Panama Canal and transport more than 40 per cent of consumer goods traded between north-east Asia and the US east coast.

What impact is the drought having on shipping?

Carriers have been forced to offload cargo or consider alternative routes tocomply with restrictions imposed by the Panama Canal Authority.

The government agency has reduced maximum ship weights and daily ship crossings in a bid to conserve the canal’s water.

He said the drought means that water isn’t being replaced at the moment.

Ship owners have the options of carrying less cargo, adding thousands of kilometres to their trips or grappling with queues that earlier this month backed up 160 vessels and delayed some ships by as much as 21 days.

Panama Canal Authority recently opened two more passage slots per day for ships that don’t have have priority to pass, as container ship do, and this week the backlog had decreased since to 115 ships.

NOTICE: China Golden Week October 1st – 7th

Stockwell International would like clients to be aware of the upcoming Chinese holiday, Golden Week (Chinese National Day Holiday).

From the 1st of October to the 7th, all businesses in China will be closed in celebration of this holiday.

It is important to get prepared and speak to your suppliers to ensure your shipments are not delayed.

How to prepare?

Challenges to expect:

Factory closures halt goods delivered from factories to ports, and ports will function at a lower capacity due to the seasonal shipping rush from Golden Week closures. Ocean freight services may be full or overbooked earlier than usual, causing challenges in securing container space as carriers will be in high demand. As a result, this will increase rates for freight and other delivery services in and out of China.

What you can do to avoid stressing your supply chain:

If you want to avoid disruptions in your supply chain, placing orders well before the Golden Week is best. By preparing in advance and being mindful of deadlines, you can ensure your freight delivery runs smoothly.

Check-in with your manufacturer:

Consult with your manufacturer and factories ahead of time on closures and final shipment dates to confirm that your supplies will reach you before the holiday. By booking your ocean freight at least three weeks in advance, you will have time to plan for any potential production delays and avoid disruptions in your supply chain.

Organise your inventory to overcome delays or shortages:

The ramifications of delays in shipping and manufacturing can be long-lasting. If you’re receiving shipments from China, it’s best to communicate closely with your supplier. The dates of these shipments can change in the weeks leading up to Golden Week, as factories are working at full capacity. Ensure you have alternatives, such as organising inventory to avoid shortages due to delayed or slow shipments.

With proper planning and communication, you can prepare your supply chain for the impacts of the Chinese New Year, ensuring that you can continue serving your customers during this time. By working with freight services providers, freight forwarders, port authorities and logistics experts, you can mitigate any potential disruptions and ensure seamless operations during this period of production closures.

NEWS: Hurricane Idalia makes landfall in Florida as category three storm, before being downgraded.

Source: ABC News

Hurricane Idalia has made landfall on Florida’s west coast as a dangerous category three storm and unleashed 205kph winds, life-threatening storm surges and rainfall in an area not accustomed to such pummelling, before dropping to a category one storm.

More than 263,000 customers were without electricity as trees snapped by strong winds brought down powerlines and rushing water covered streets.

Along the coast, some homes were submerged to near their rooftops and structures crumpled, as the eye of the hurricane moved inland, destructive winds shredded signs and sent sheet metal flying.

“We have multiple trees down, debris on the roads, do not come,” posted the fire and rescue department in Cedar Key, where a tide gauge measured the storm surge at two metres, submerging most of the downtown.

“We have propane tanks blowing up all over the island.”

Idalia came ashore in the lightly populated Big Bend region, where the Florida Panhandle curves into the peninsula.

Idalia arrived as a category three storm, the third highest on the hurricane wind scale and considered likely to cause devastating damage.

Idalia came ashore at 7:45 am (local time) at Keaton Beach, an ocean-front community of 13,000 people in Taylor County, about 121 km south-east of Tallahassee, the state capital.

The town lies in the centre of the Big Bend region, where the state’s northern panhandle curves into the Florida Peninsula.

It weakened to a category one hurricane as it crossed into Georgia, with top winds of 150kph at 11am, after drenching Florida mostly to the east of Tallahassee.

Just south of Valdosta, Georgia, Interstate 75 was closed after power lines fell across the highway.

Forecasters said it would punish the Carolinas overnight as a tropical storm.

Some models predicted Idalia could circle southward toward land again after that, but the National Hurricane Center forecast it to move deeper into the Atlantic this weekend.
