Stockwell International News Alert 18th February 2022

Congestion and Full Capacity in Perth

Stockwell International has received information regarding the congestion and capacity issues in Perth.

As Australia’s East Coast has continued to see congestion and supply chain issues it is now being seen on the West Coast.

Vessels are banking up off the Perth coast and then becoming available back to back, causing issues for transport carriers to clear the containers from the wharf within the free time assigned. In addition to this, the high volume of cargo arriving in Perth is also resulting in problems with de-hiring containers within set timeframes.

Last week nine vessels became available back to back, and the trend will continue with irregularities in vessel movements and transhipments affecting the Perth ports.

Transport carriers are working their way through a large backlog of containers while also sourcing more staff to handle the new cargo that continues to arrive.

Unfortunately, the de-hiring of containers is being affected and cannot always occur within demurrage free time. Our carriers will continue to do their utmost to return containers within set periods; Stockwell’s will continue to request extensions and longer return times as needed; however, should there be detention charged, we will have no choice but to charge these fees to you.

NEWS: Svitzer Tugboat Masters to Strike by Ian Ackerman

THE AUSTRALIAN Maritime Officers Union on Saturday announced that masters of Svitzer tugboats would strike in the ports of Brisbane, Sydney (Botany and Jackson), Cairns and Newcastle.

The union notified the company of three stop-work periods of 48 hours each on 17, 22 and 24 February.

DCN understands these strikes will cause significant disruption to shipping at the four locations.

There are exemptions to the work bans where the masters will mobilise for emergencies, defence or threat to life and property.

The union said the strike is in pursuit of a new enterprise agreement to replace the one that expired on 31 December 2019.
