Transport Strike

As some of you may be aware, the Transport Workers Union has initiated strike action within several major carrier networks recently in response to a breakdown in wage negotiations. This action will impact several carrier networks on Thursday 30th September. Drivers will strike for 24 hours from midnight Wednesday 29th September to 11:59pm Thursday 30th September. This will affect all pickups and deliveries nationwide on Thursday. We also anticipate it will create transit delays into the early part of next week. Please consider this in your dispatch planning this week.

Networks will be further impacted this week by a positive COVID-19 case at the Melbourne Airport air freight facility. This depot area has been closed for deep cleaning and some carriers have initiated their COVID management plan for staff close contacts. This closure will impact all international freight into and out of Melbourne. It has also halted all domestic Overnight Express services (including Overnight Express, 9am/10am/12pm Express services and Time Critical Sameday services) into and out of Melbourne. Imports will be re-routed via Sydney’s Mascot depot and transferred to Melbourne via road service and all domestic Overnight Express and Time Critical freight will be re-routed to the Road Express network. This will result in extended transit times. At this stage, the Melbourne depot handling Road Express freight has not been listed as an exposure site.

The Sadleirs Melbourne depot has also has a positive case and initiated their COVID management plan. The depot will remain on skeleton staff while close contacts serve their 14 day isolation period. This will impact on Melbourne pickups and deliveries and East-West transits during this time.

We will continue to work with carriers for updates on the COVID-19 situations. If you have an urgent airfreight requirement into or out of Melbourne, please contact our customer service team or your account manager for advise on how to best manage it while networks recover.
