Sydney's trade environment demands expert customs management

Built for Reliability. Designed for Growth.

As the engine room of Australian commerce, Sydney handles more import and export volume than any other Australian city. For businesses importing through Port Botany or Sydney Airport, the margin for error is slim, delays cost money, compliance failures cost more. Stockwells provides the expertise and systems to keep your cargo moving and your business protected.

Our Sydney team works directly with the Australian Border Force (ABF), the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), and port operators to manage every stage of clearance. We lodge entries through the Integrated Cargo System (ICS), monitor compliance requirements in real time, and keep you informed at every step.

A unique advantage — our Sydney depot

Unlike many customs brokers who operate solely as intermediaries, Stockwells has a physical presence in Sydney. Our Ingleburn depot provides real operational capability — including in-house fumigation services for goods requiring biosecurity treatment. This means faster turnaround on DAFF-referred cargo and fewer third-party delays in your clearance process.

Frequently asked questions — Perth customs clearance

What's the difference between a customs broker and a freight forwarder in Sydney?

A freight forwarder arranges the physical movement of your goods, booking carriers, coordinating transport. A customs broker manages the legal and compliance side, lodging import entries, classifying goods, calculating duties, and ensuring you meet all ABF requirements. Stockwells provides both services, which means your shipment has a single point of coordination from origin to delivery.

Port Botany congestion can create delays in container availability, but customs clearance itself can often be lodged and approved before your vessel arrives. Stockwells lodges entries in advance wherever possible, so ABF approval is secured and your container can be released the moment it’s available at the wharf.

When the ABF refers your goods to the Department of Agriculture for biosecurity inspection, it’s called a DAFF referral. This can occur for certain plant, animal, or food products. Stockwells coordinates directly with DAFF officers, arranges transport to inspection facilities if required, and can facilitate in-house fumigation at our Sydney depot, minimising the time your goods are held.

Australia’s FTAs with trading partners like China, Japan, South Korea, ASEAN nations, and the UK allow eligible goods to attract reduced or zero import duty rates. To claim these preferential rates, your goods must meet rules of origin requirements and be supported by the correct documentation (such as a Certificate of Origin). Stockwells assesses each shipment for FTA eligibility and prepares the required documentation so you capture every available saving.

Yes. Many businesses come to us after years of self-managing customs entries and discover they’ve been misclassifying goods or missing FTA entitlements. Stockwells offers compliance reviews for existing importers, identifying risk areas and refund opportunities without disrupting your current operations.
